Wooden Church of All Saints in Tvrdošín
The oldest preserved building in the town is located in the town cemetery in Tvrdošín – the Gothic wooden church of All Saints from the 15th century. Since 2008, it has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, along with other wooden churches in the Slovak part of the Carpathians. UNESCO World Heritage List.
What will you see?
From the outside, it impresses with its steep shingle roof and slender turret, which it received during the Renaissance reconstruction in the 17th century. Inside, there is a Baroque main altar of All Saints from the end of the 17th century, a Renaissance pulpit with figures of the evangelists (1654), a painting of St. George riding a dragon (1653) and a ceiling painted as a starry sky.
After restoration in the 1990s, the church received the European Europa Nostra award.
Good to know
- The tour takes about 20-30 minutes, the church is a few minutes walk from Trojičný námestie.
- In season (May - September) it is open Tue - Sun 10:00 - 16:00. Out of season only after booking at least a day in advance: 0903 375 929, msksts@orava.sk.
- Services are held here only twice a year – on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.
