Orava Castle
Orava Castle stands on a steep limestone cliff high above the Orava River and is one of the most beautiful and most visited castles in Slovakia. The first written mention of it dates back to 1267.
What will you see?
The castle is divided into lower, middle and upper. It has about 155 rooms in total and you will climb more than 750 steps to explore the entire castle. The exhibitions feature archaeology, history, ethnography and nature of Orava, one of the highlights is the chapel of St. Michael. Scenes from the famous silent film were also filmed at the castle. Nosferatu (1922).
Sightseeing tours
- Small circle (about 30 min) – only the lower castle, also suitable for people with a fear of heights
- Basic circuit (about 60 min) – recommended for families with children
- Big circle (about 90 min) – all accessible parts
In July and August there are also guided tours and evening tours with theatrical skits.
Good to know
- Tickets are sold only at the box office under the castle cliff (or online, no later than 2 hours before the tour).
- There are two paid parking lots near the castle, and it is about a 4-minute walk to the ticket office.
- Due to the steep terrain, the castle cannot be accessed with a stroller or wheelchair, and dogs are not allowed.
- There is no shelter at the entrance - bring appropriate clothing in case of bad weather.
