Statue of Christ on the Grape - Rio de Klin

Above the village of Klin near Námestovo stands Grapa Hill (686 m above sea level). the tallest statue of Christ in Slovakia. It is 9.5 meters tall, has an arm span of 7 meters and weighs 23 tons including the pedestal. Due to its resemblance to the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, it is popularly called Rio de Klin.

A view worth coming for

From under the statue you can see the entire surroundings: Klin, Orava Dam, Námestovo, Vavrečka, Suchá Hora and Roháče. In clear weather you can see as far as the Polish Giewont above Zakopane. The most beautiful place here is at sunset.

The story of the statue

The statue was created by a local folk carver. Peter Ganobjak, the construction was financed by businessman Jozef Sroka. Work began in November 2007 – the iron structure was poured with concrete, on May 1, 2008 it was transported to the hill, covered with aerated concrete and the carver finished it by hand with an axe and hoe.

How to get here

You can drive almost to the statue – the parking lot is by the wooden shelter, from there it is a few minutes walk along the Way of the Cross. You can take the bus to Klin (stop at the cooperative) and then about 30 minutes on foot. The climb is easy, even children can do it. The area is freely accessible all year round and admission is free.
