Veľký Choč (1611 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the Choč Mountains and, thanks to its isolated location, it can be seen from almost anywhere in Orava. Its peak lies in the Vyšný Kubín cadastre and is protected as the Choč National Nature Reserve with its rich limestone flora.

What will you see?

From the bare rocky peak there is a view in all directions: the Western and High Tatras, the Low Tatras, the Malá and Veľká Fatra, the Orava Dam, the Liptovská Mara and below you the basins of Orava and Liptov. It is one of the best viewpoint peaks in Slovakia.

How to get there

From the Orava side, you will leave Vyšný Kubín following the green and later red trail through Siatiská and Drapáč - the ascent takes about 3.5 hours with an elevation gain of about 1080 m. The shortest route starts in Valaská Dubová in Liptov (blue and green trail through Stredná poľana), you will be at the top in approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. The crossing from Valaská Dubová to Jasenová in Orava is also popular.

Good to know

  • Admission is free, and the trail is open year-round.
  • There is no hut or spring at the top - take plenty of water.
  • Move only on marked trails, the area is strictly protected.
  • In winter and when wet, the top part is slippery, so good footwear is required, and in winter, non-slip shoes are also required.
